Nathan Carroll - Illinois - Nonsurgical Pain Management Nurse Anesthetist

Nathan is a highly skilled Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and Nonsurgical Pain Management Provider, recognized for his precision, clinical versatility, and unwavering commitment to patient-centered care. His practice bridges two complex specialties—advanced interventional pain management and comprehensive perioperative anesthesia—allowing him to care for patients across the full spectrum of acute, chronic, and procedural needs.

In his pain management role, Nathan treats a wide range of debilitating conditions including fibromyalgia, migraines, trigeminal neuralgia, complex regional pain syndrome, radiculopathies, joint and musculoskeletal disorders, neuropathic syndromes, cancer pain, and post‑surgical pain syndromes. His expertise extends to complex cases such as phantom limb pain, central post‑stroke pain, post‑laminectomy syndrome, spasticity, and opioid‑related complications including hyperalgesia and weaning.

Nathan’s procedural skill set is exceptional. He performs an extensive array of ultrasound‑guided and fluoroscopic‑guided interventional pain procedures, including nerve blocks, radiofrequency ablations, epidural steroid injections, sympathetic blocks, joint and bursa injections, cryoneurolysis, trigger point therapy, and advanced interventions such as stellate ganglion blocks, celiac plexus blocks, lumbar sympathetic blocks, and superior hypogastric plexus blocks. His ability to navigate complex anatomy with accuracy and confidence has made him a trusted clinician for patients requiring nonsurgical pain solutions.

As a Nurse Anesthetist, Nathan maintains a broad and demanding anesthesia practice. His surgical case mix includes endoscopy, ENT (pediatric and adult), general surgery, gynecology, podiatry, obstetrics, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and urology. He provides the full continuum of anesthetic care, from pre‑operative assessment and anesthetic planning to intraoperative management and post‑operative evaluation.

Nathan is proficient in emergency airway management, including emergent intubations, and serves as a member of the hospital CODE team. His procedural anesthesia skills include ultrasound‑guided IV access, PICC line placement, central and arterial line insertion, labor epidural management, epidural blood patches, and diagnostic lumbar punctures. His regional anesthesia experience spans upper and lower extremity blocks, truncal blocks, fascial plane blocks, and advanced techniques such as IPACK, PENG, and erector spinae plane blocks.

He acquired board certification for Nonsurgical Pain Management in 2024. Nathan earned his Doctor of Nursing Practice with a specialization in Nurse Anesthesia in 2022 and his Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2017.

Nathan is also a committed educator. He serves as a preceptor for student registered nurse anesthetists and provides clinical education to house supervisors, ER nurses, OB nurses, and medical‑surgical nurses. His scholarly work includes the development of evidence‑based rubrics and instructional videos for anesthesia induction sequences, published in 2022.

Across every role—"anesthesia provider, pain specialist, educator, and emergency provider"—Nathan brings a rare combination of technical mastery, compassion, and steady leadership. His work continues to elevate the standard of care for patients experiencing pain, undergoing surgery, or facing critical moments in their lives.

Nathan has a strong interest in weight loss and healthy cooking, and has compiled favorite recipes of his grandmother. An avid traveler, he has visited Switzerland on numerous occasions and enjoyed taking in locales such as Murren, Gimmelwald, Jungfrau, Lauterbrunnen, and Eiger. Nathan Carroll’s favorite experiences include touring the Lindt chocolate factory and traveling by world heritage train from Tirano to St. Moritz.
